For this lab we were supposed to find the percent of water in epsom salt. We did this by heating epsom salt using a Bunsen burner and a hot plate. We then made calculations using our findings to determine the percentage of water.
This lab definitely uses 21st century thinking and problem solving skills. We had to figure out what measurements to use and determine if our calculations were correct. This pushed us to reach out to others as well as use trial and error until we got to the right conclusion.
I am proud that I took my time filling out this lab and that I got full credit. This class is very difficult but I am learning a lot and it is paying off.
Being in a college stem class in high school is very difficult, you are in an environment where it is fully your responsibility to understand the content. The fact that me and my partner kept trying until we got it right showed that I am improving my skills and determination.
This lab was difficult because I had never really worked with things in a lab before this class. Being patient while dealing with the hot tools is very important because you can be harmed. You have to be very mindful in the lab along with trying you best to complete the lab properly.
If I did this lab again I wouldn’t do anything different. This lab was a turning point for me and I started to notice that I could understand what the professor was trying to teach us. Me and my partner were very thorough and it is for that reason that we got full credit.
I took chemistry as a high school class and was able to use my past knowledge of the periodic table to get more comfortable with the lab. This foundation of base knowledge has helped me learn the content of the chem lecture and use these skills in the lab.
This can help me in the future not because of the content but because of the hard work I put into it. This project taught me that hard work pays off and that is something that is useful for the future.
