While working with Maui Huliau we were presented with a curriculum covering climate change. We then chose a solution through project drawdown, and created a website based on our research of said solution. Our group chose reducing food waste with a focus on composting.
I learned a lot during this project. Since all of our teachers participated in covering the topic of climate change we learned a variety of things, one interesting thing to me was the nitrogen cycle. While researching the effects of reducing food waste I learned that we could compost food waste and we could not only help maui become more sustainable, we could also reduce the amount of CO2 released. As well as restore the nitrogen cycle by not producing toxic fertilizers and rejuvenating the natural soils that are carbon sinks, this would also be reducing methane emissions from decaying waste in landfills. Since I learned so much I became proud of all the work we put in to complete our website and the quality that it turned out to be in the end. I hope the research we completed will be used to make a difference and expand ways we are fighting climate change in Hawaii.
We completed this project in a group therefore we always had support while completing tasks. Learning all this content at once can be somewhat overwhelming at times which I would say was my major struggle. I feel overall proud of what we completed, although I wish we got responses from the experts we contacted. I plan to continue even further on this journey of educating myself on climate change solutions.
There are many 21st century skills provided in this website. One would be informational skills, we had to research our specific topic and we then presented all the information we gathered into a website. Since this was a group project, we also practiced our interpersonal skills, we had to be able to communicate what we needed to get done in a certain time frame. Since climate change is a global problem, we also addressed the global awareness 21st century skill.
